Christmas is traditionally a time when the home is cleaned from floor to ceiling. The sauna, the heart of the Finnish home, deserves special attention, as a clean sauna brings not only the Christmas spirit but also enjoyable steam baths. In this article, we give tips for cleaning the Christmas sauna using products and expertise from the HETI series.
Why is the sauna cleaned specifically for Christmas?
Tradition obliges: the sauna must be clean for Christmas. From a hygiene perspective, a thorough cleaning can of course be done at any time, but washing the Christmas sauna is a Finnish custom that connects past and future generations. Both people and skin thrive in a clean sauna.
Tools and Workwear for Cleaning
Cleaning a sauna requires the right tools, such as:
- Safety mop for washing benches
- Grout brush for cleaning tile joints
- Floor drain brush for thorough drain cleaning
- Drying mop for wiping gaps in walls
Appropriate work footwear for the cleaner, such as rubber boots, is a necessity in wet areas as they prevent slipping and keep feet dry.
Cleaning the Sauna and Washroom
1. Washing the Benches
Use HETI Raspo Joutsen, which is designed specifically to remove grease and dirt from benches. Wet the benches with warm water, apply the detergent, and scrub thoroughly. If there is a need for disinfecting washing, the product choice is HETI Desipesu Pro.
2. Cleaning Tiles and Grouts
For lime removal, use HETI Kapu Joutsen (acidic product). Remember to neutralize the surfaces after lime removal with an alkaline cleaner, such as HETI Raspo Joutsen (alkaline agent), ensuring that the acidic agent does not remain to affect the grouts. HETI Raspo Joutsen simultaneously removes greasy dirt. For disinfecting washing, HETI Desipesu Pro is suitable. Sometimes a single wash with acid and alkaline is not enough to clean sufficiently. In that case, start the round of agents from the beginning. It is important to remember to use the alkaline product last to neutralize the grouts.
3. Cleaning the Floor Drain
Floor drains collect plenty of dirt and bacteria. Scrub the drain thoroughly with a suitable brush and, if necessary, use a disinfecting cleaner like HETI Klooripesu Pro. HETI Klooripesu Pro should only be used with cool water. The floor drain should always be cleaned first, before cleaning the floor and walls. Otherwise, dirt from the drain may splash onto the freshly washed floor and walls.
4. Sauna Glass and Walls
Lime from water and steam accumulates on sauna glass. Wash the sauna glass with a lime remover and dry them immediately to avoid water drop marks. For walls, a safety mop or drying mop works well. A drying mop easily removes dust from horizontally paneled sauna walls.
Tips for a Successful Result
- Initially use warm water to wet the benches and walls. This opens the wood grain and facilitates the effect of the detergent. The final rinse water should be cool, which closes the wood grain again.
- Dry surfaces thoroughly after washing. A squeegee/dryer speeds up work and prevents the formation of lime residues.
- Lift the benches up so that their underside dries properly and bacterial growth is prevented.
- Surfaces are always wetted from bottom to top before applying the detergent solution. Similarly, the detergent is applied from bottom to top.
Care for Non-Washable Saunas
The cleaning of infrared saunas and older saunas can be handled by damp wiping. Use a drying mop and seat covers to protect the surfaces.
